Trebonianus Gallus, AE Sestertius. AD 251. IMP CAES C VIBIVS TREBONIANVS GALLVS AVG, laureate, draped bust right / VOTIS-DECENNA-LIBVS-SC in four lines within laurel wreath. RIC 127a; Cohen 137; Sear 9683.

Again, draped and cuirassed; and his name is Trebonianus..

This is a scarce and historical rev. type: Gallus, soon after his accession, undertakes decennalian vows, to be paid if his reign lasted nine or ten years, which was not to be the case.

The fool-proof Roman system.  You don't pay for your vow unless you actually rule that long.

I have one of this type as well, though in worse condition.  The reverse legend is just as uneven.  I had wondered if it was an imitation but clearly they had just lowered their standard somewhat......

Darn.  Turns out I traded my example a while back.  I just went to check and see if it was a reverse die match as I remember the same creature of the lettering.
