ID Help, Half Follis
« on: January 15, 2014, 09:50:53 pm »
Pretty much new to collecting and this is my first coin of this type/period.
25x28mm, weight unknown.
Closest match I could find on WWs was SB231.

Also, I noticed that alot of these Byzantine coins seem to have ragged edges yet earlier Roman coins seem to retain their roundness despite wear. Why is that?
Thanks

Good find, Phil!
This is a Justinianus, SBCV 165, MIBE 96 = Tolstoj 331. You´ve got a rare year-officina-combination of this type, for Hahn (MIBE) lists only one reference-coin for year XUIII=18 and second officina = B. But this doesn´t make you a rich man ;)
The ragged edges are results of the minting process, not of use and time. It´s a question of alloy, pressure and temerature.

Best regards Posa

Wow, thanks Posa! That's great to know.
I plucked this coin from a bargain bin at the NYC coin show. Paid close to nothing for it.
