I think this diminutive Bactrian eagle from the BOT gallery must be up there with the best of the portrayals .... https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-67648
.... it is just marvellous in the way it captures the king of birds and all on 11 mm diameter!

Plenty of solitary eagles, eagles attacking snakes, eagles on thunderbolts, but now it time for an eagle preying on a hare...
Elis, Olympia, 134th-143rd Olympiad, 244-208 BC, AR Drachm

Does this segue into the next animal folly.... a bunch of bouncing bunnies?   ;D

Soon we'll have the whole food chain covered!

Another example from Olympia this time: Elis, Olympia, 134th-143rd Olympiad, 244-208 BC, AR Drachm

The eagle from Alexandreia/Troas:

Troas, Alexandria, time of Gallienus, AD 253-268
AE 24, 5.12g
obv. ALEX - TRO
Bust of city-goddess (Tyche), draped and turreted, r., behind vexillum inscribed CO/AV
rev. CO - L - AVG - TRO
Eagle, with raised wings, flying r., holding in his talons forehead of bull
ref. Bellinger A490 (type 47); SNG Copenhagen 114; BMC 53-56
EF, superb specimen

The depiction is referring to the founder myth of Alexandreia: The eagle carrying a bull's head which is a common occurence from now [Commodus Caesar] on, must refer to a foundation legend, like that told of Antioch on the Orontes, of an eagle carrying part of a sacrificial animal to a spot where the new city was destined to raise (Bellinger).

Best regards

Yeah, there are not too many of these types which are quite common on ancient coins that we haven't run a thread on... lions, bulls, ships, etc., in addition to those I've bumped up in the last few days.
And Joe has many of these types categorized in the shop as well.

Well, I'm pretty sure that's still how I'm gonna continue to roll-out my Steve gallery ... they're mostly animal coins ... a lot of ships and weapons as well ... and wine related ... and chick coins

=> animals, ships, weapons, wine & women ........ what else is there, right?
