Standing Male plaque with Phallus
« on: November 03, 2021, 03:03:59 pm »
Ave!

Cast Lead; 64mm/9.3gm

Another ground-found artifact from Ukraine. Possibly of Scythian origin or...?

Depicted, this bearded fellow has a very stern and glowering face and a certainly
erect phallus.

Have any of you seen, or have any knowledge, as to whom this proud fellow could be or represent?

I am resending this, as apparently my original post didn’t make it.
The object is called a “Herm.”
They were/are found in some ancient cities along streets. They were made of marble or some type of stone.
The image can also be found on some ancient coins and mosaics.
Google “herm” to learn of their symbolism.

Ave!

Not exactly a Herm, but certainly Priapus.
Perhaps used in a household shrine?

No, this is a herm.  The rectangular structure distinguishes it from anything else.

They do not really have anything to do with Priapus.  The original Greek Hermes was a phallic god first.  But then herms were used for other gods too.

Apparently, the all-pillar herm like this was Greek and the Roman ones had more of a bust form on the upper part.

It would make sense that this comes from the Eastern parts of the Roman world - Ukraine was really Greek.

Thanks!

As an addendum to the Herm, this fragment was also included.

Also part of a herm figurine.
