The next coin is very worn, but I think I got it.

A correction for Severus

Septimius Severus, AD 193-211

I think this Longinus legend for Macrinus / Apollo (Hr-H-J 8.23.7.6-8) with OV ligature is unattested in Nikopolis Addenda; this coin is an AE27, 11.27g:

A new die combination (or a correction?) for Commodus

Commodus, AD 177-192
AE 17, 2.57g, 17.38mm, 180°
obv. AVT KAI [AV] - KOMODOC
       Laureate head r.
rev. NIKOPO - LI[TWN PR]OC IT(sic!)
Altar on which a snake is coiling up r.
Ref.: a) not in AMNG:
cf. AMNG I/1, 1249 (for the type only)
        b) not in Varbanov
        c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2017):
rev. No. 8.10.47.3 var. (has PROC I)
obv. e.g. No. 8.10.47.1 (same die)
coll. Hoeft

The rev. legend has clearly the legend error PROC IT. It is possibly that it is No. 8.10.47.3 because the depicted coin is very worn and the legends only partially readable. Then it would be a correction.

I think your coin is rare, at least scarce. Sadly that fact has usually no big influence on the price. I have added it under #058 to Nikopolis Addenda #5. Please, can you share size and weight to complete the listing!

I would buy it myself if I only would have the chance!

Hi archivum!

Both of your coins are listed in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2017):

(1) Caracalla with cow grazing r. is No. 8.18.53.2 (same dies).
(2) Diadumenian, Demeter enthronend l., struck under Agrippa, is No. 8.25.5.2 (same dies).

The appearance of this Concordia sacrificing type for Septimius under Gallus at Nicomedia is no great surprise, however, since the same type was already known at the same mint for Caracalla under Tertullus and for Geta as Augustus under Ulpian, HHJ 2012, pp. 211 and 255.

I am a little confused that HHJ 2012 assigns different type numbers to Concordia (36) and Homonoia (42). Has that been changed in later editions? I thought these two were one and the same personification.

There's a similar doubling of Tyche / Phortuna (Cyrillic) in Hr-J Nikopolis 1st edition; I hope that has been retired also. Jochen, many thanks for the Hr-H-J references.

Dear Curtis!

I always write Homonoia (like Varbanov too), because the legends are in Greek and Homonoia is the Greek equivalent for the Latin Concordia, cum grano salis. In Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov Mr. Jekov always writes Concordia, I think because Pick has always written Concordia instead of Homonoia. Why Pick has written Concordia whereas all other deities he has given their Greek names, I don't know. Perhaps you can solve this riddle.

I don't have seen any confusion of names in our last editions.

Best regards
