Adlocutio scene on Probus shield from Ticinum
« on: July 18, 2020, 06:23:23 am »
Good morning guys. This aurelianianus of Probus from Ticinum, minted in 278, shows a military bust of the emperor, with helm, spear and shield. The shield shows an unusual scene: the emperor, standing on a suggestum, in adlocutio pose, with two rows of soldiers in front of him. Probus is represented with the right arm raised and with the left outstretched, in a way similar to the pose of Sol on the reverse.
I've never seen this kind of shield on a Probus aurelianianus.
Do you know if this type is listed?

Thank you

Could not it be that Sol is Conservator of the Augustus on the reverse and also, as a consequence, Conservator of the Augustus’army as represented on the shield of the Augustus on the obverse (Sol cult seemingly very common amongst the military during the 3d century), through/because of  ProbusVirtus ?

The coin is presumably minted in 278, when Probus celebrates the conclusion of the germanic campaign and a donativum took place in Ticinum. The Adlocutio scene on the shield fit with the conclusion of the campaign, when the emperor dismiss the troops. There is a type of aurelianianus of Probus with reverse type ADLOCVTIO AVG, with emperor on suggestum surrounded by troops, minted in the same year. As AMICTUS says, the figure on the shield can be the Sol, even if the scene is typical of the emperor Adlocutio. Maybe it could be that emperor is represented as Sol: in this case he is not his companion but the emperor himself.

Sorry to discover this post so late. This coin (and its obverse die) is an unicum: I completely agree with Amictus, in seing on the shield held by Probus on the obverse, Sol, right hand stretched and holding a globe in the left hand (the globe is quite visible, and the personage is naked) in the personification haranguing the soldier, replacing the usual image of the Emperor in military attire in an adlocutio. This image on the shied held by the Emperor on the obverse responds to the reverse CONSERVAT AVG //TXXT, showing Sol with the similar attributes. This coin which belongs to the 3rd em. in Ticinum can be compared with another unicum (Solidus sale 22, 2014, 228) belonging to the same emission, showing the same obverse and the same CONSERVAT AVG/ Sol reverse, but showing Sol's radiate head left, on the shield held by Probus on the obverse.
Very interesting coin, to be compared with the medallions struck at the same time in Ticinum, displaying on the obverse the jugate busts of Probus in arms (armed spear and shield) and of Sol radiate, as "war companions" on an equal step, with the legend IMP PROBVS INVICTVS AVG: the assimilation of Probus to his companion and conservator is clear.
