Old Byzantine rosette / ?

Hello,

I have this old object that my father found years ago in eastern Turkey.
It looks a bit like a rosette or perhaps some kind of dice.
Does anyone have an idea what it might be?

What is it made of?  Could it be a natural crystal?

Thanks for the idea! After doing some research, it really does look like a natural staurolite crystal.
