Most
Roman sites yield huge numbers of orangish baked
terracotta roof tiles. While some of these might have been bricks, including hypocaust bricks, most are roof tiles.
A small fraction of the tiles were stamped by the manufacturer. These consist of names, often in short form, when the bricks were made by civilian firms. However, at, or around,
military sites they bear stamps from the Legion in whose workshops they were made.
Below are images of a few tiles. feel free to add your own.
The first two are from the 14th legion at
Carnuntum. The legion's full name was
Legio XIV Gemina Martia
Victrix. Its full usual stamp was LEGXIIIIGMV. The Gs sometimes look like Cs. The ending can differ slightly. Note that they use XIIII for fourteen. This was more common than XIV in the 2nd - 3rd century though looks odd today when IV and XIV have replaced IIII and XIIII.
The first brick was found by my son at the edge of a farm
field. This fragment has GXIIII. The second by me in a farm
field. This fragment has XIIIIGM.
