The group of lead
amulets to which this article is dedicated will have been encountered by collectors of
seals and
tesserae. They display a distinct magical iconography and a wide variety of “‘names of power’, most of which are divine and angelic names that find their origin in Judaism and Christianity. The divine names Iao and Sabaoth, both derived from Hebrew (the tetragrammaton and the Hebrew epiteth “of Hosts”) are encountered most often, but a small group of
amulets also mentions the name Adonai (“Lord”).
