Your favorite REVERSE portrait from your collection?
« on: March 15, 2025, 08:03:05 pm »
I love Ron C2’s thread “Your favorite obverse portrait from your collection?” so much that I just had to copy it, but for reverses. Greek, Roman, otherwise, please post them if you love them.

I will kick this off with a coin that has remained in my top three ever since I purchased it from Joe at Forum in January of 2019. Since that time I have yet to find a better representation of Scylla in all of her beautiful glory. Under 25x magnification you can see the expression on her face.

Great historical piece and wonderful reverse!

Here is one of my favorite Republican reverses, the barbarian head looking like a lion with flowing mane.

Helmeted head of Roma right
EX SC before, ROMA and XVI in monogram gehind

Helmeted horseman galloping left, holding sword and severed Gallic head in left hand
M SERGI below, SILVS in ex, Q below horses's forelegs

Rome 116-115 BC

I am having trouble deciding which reverse is my favorite. So I will post both of them.

Both reverses show Apollo.

First reverse:
Tetradrachm from Myrina, ca 160-150 BC.
16.49 gm, 32 mm.

Second reverse:
Tetradrachm from Magnesia, ca 150 BC.
16.37 gm, 30 mm.

Jay and Callimachus,

Wow, what great entries. The two representations of Apollo are breathtaking in their detail. Oh, and that severed Gallic head with the flowing hair? An amazing reverse.

Beautiful coins above and a fun topic!
It would be hard for me to pick a single favorite. But I am partial to this VRBS ROMA reverse.  It part because I cleaned it and it part bc I like the simplicity of the design and it’s focus on the founding myth. Bf, nearly finished, waxed in photo. I may yet strip the wax and try to smooth some of the scratches in the patina and then re-wax.

Great thread! My favourite ancient coin reverse still remains the cute little owl on my Athenian tetradrachm, which is one of the most influential coins of all time. They were used as payment to soldiers, in international trade, and for storing wealth. In everyday use, this type of coin was called glaux (γλαύξ, 'little owl') because of the coin's reverse image of the owl of Athena, the iconographic symbol of the Athenian polis, with a sprig of olive and a crescent for the moon. The obverse was stamped with the head of Athena.

Ken,

Beautiful reverse and an outstanding cleaning.

Serendipity,

Ahh yes, I agree that there's nothing quite like the iconic Athenian tetradrachm. Simply a beautiful coin all around and as you state, so historically important. I think that every collection of Greek coins should contain one. When I finally added one to my collection, purchased from Joe right here at Forum, I was thrilled.

All the best,

Tracy

This is a rather common Postumus (RIC V.2 309), but being a former gym rat, I gotta love the bod. Arnold would be proud.
Best,

Thanks for the kind words, Tracy and Enodia.

The Scylla on Tracy's coin is the finest rendering I recall ever seeing. In searching online for information on, and and depictions of Scylla, I found this interesting site:

Thank you, Kevin. I agree.

Also, thank you for the link to the Theoi Greek Mythology website. I actually have the Scylla page bookmarked.

Several years ago I read Scylla. Myth, Metaphor, Paradox by Marianne Govers Hopman (Cambridge University Press: Cambridge, 2015). It was, to be honest, one of the most intellectually challenging books that I have read. Worth it, however.

All the best,

Tracy

Coming back to this thread again, thinking about other favorite reverses in my collection. Then it hit me: my profile picture!

A most wonderful archaic representation of Larissa playing with her ball. One of my top three favorite reverses. I hope that you enjoy. And, for a very different representation, estimated no more than approximately 40 years later, see Lot 173 in the recently closed Künker Auction 419.

My reverse: Thessaly, Greece, the City of Larissa. Silver obol; City of Larissa; Date: c. 460 - 440 BC; Weight: .99g; Diameter: 10mm: Die axis: 180º; References, for example: Imhoof-Blumer Nymphen: p. 69 no. 186 pl. V no. 18; Herrmann Group II b 𝛃 pl. I 16; Traité IV, 654 var. legend placement, Larissa r., pl. CCXCVI, 11; BCD Thessaly I 1111 (this coin); HGC 4 486.

All the coins depicted here are great. I have a few I really love, but my love for the story makes me have to pick this one.

Through all the bloody slaughter of the Iliad and Odyssey, it's this scene of Odysseus' homecoming and his faithful dog that always makes me cry.
Great coin!

Thanks all and to Tracey for starting this thread. Peter, that is by far the saddest part of the book(s) for me. Always makes me choke up. There is something about faithful dogs.
