Hi Iolkia.  An example of the leaping dolphin type is found in the RomQ collection on a "volute" type lamp from 1st-2nd Century CE.  To me the wear pattern and style seem very convincing, but I would have to wait for a confirmation from an expert to be certain.  This should help you find some other leads to follow for other similar examples.  Good luck!

Best regards, Jimi (V-drome)

The style, fabric, slip and motif of your lamp perfectly correspond to Loeschcke Type Ic lamps made in southern Europe (probably central Italy) during the mid-late 1st century AD, and I see no reason to doubt its authenticity. The stain below the dolphin would have been caused by an iron wick-pin left in the filling-hole, and is another nice confirmation of authenticity.

The lamp on my website that Jimi kindly linked to is a poor provincial copy of Italian lamps and, as you can see, the artwork and crudely modelled shoulder are nowhere near as fine.

Your lamp was a very nice gift!

Dear David

Thank you for your reply. Yes, a very nice gift from a dear friend.

Lychnology seems to be a fascinating discipline! I will study the typology in your web site. I have also found the typological classification at the Getty.

Best wishes,
Iolkia
