Nice and interesting addition Cannan .

Some Zangids and Artuqids are inspired by Greek and Roman dies.
As example : The portrait of Antiochos VII was considered for sure on Artuqids / Najm al-Din Alpi .
(that is my own opinion)

Thanks Jay and Sam,
I find copying coins that existed before them in one thousand and more years very fascinating and interesting, especially when knowing that they were princes of states under the abbasi khalif who forbidden (at least for his coinage) depicting human figures on coins.. but up north the Muslim prices had an autonomy and excellent relations with neighbors learning what they could from old civilizations....

Surely, ancient cultures took from each other’s.
Coins are circulating from a hand to another, maybe it was used to send a message of independence especially human images were religiously un-liked at that time.
(That is also my personal opinion )

The idea if disliking the human images on coin was " glory is only for god ", they thought human images would give the ruler kind of – not like everybody man- or god ( on the ancient way of thinking ) . Even it iwas not meant that way.
That is why it was hated, and Abdul Al Malik stopped issuing that type.

Yes, i agree Abdul-Malik issued issued his first Islamic coinage with his image for a short period and afterwards shifted to non figural coinage with plants sometimes not more, and continued from there after, but even then the local currency in the remote provinces from the Umayyad capital (Damascus) were struck imitating Sasanid drachms!!!! Very interesting !!!

Hello Robert, A question with a very long answer, but Arab Sasanid Drachms started with The most early stages of Islam, Since Alrashidun Khalifes and continued till almost the end of the Abbasid dynasty, With Pahlavi sometimes and Arabs on the other most of them copying the drachms of Khusro II mostly, the circulation was in what is called Iran today and north of Iraq mostly, Abdul-Malik Bin Marwan issued some Arab Sasanid drachms with his name, but shortly after he stopped issuing them but continued in the northern provinces from Basra up north and north east. Some examples of early Abdul-Malik dirhams:
