Hi

Help! Can you help me to identify this Vespasian Denarius?
I have such problems with it.
Weight 3.3g, "AVG" on shield in oak wreath.

best regards

Thnak´s for your answer.

Ephesus RIC 1392 is ok, but where is the shield??
That´s my question.

best regards

The portrait style looks correct for early Ephesus. The weight is OK and it doesn't appear to be plated. Perhaps it is an early proto-type of the AVG in wreath?

For now, I would catalogue it as a variant of RIC 1392.

But doesn't RIC 1393 describe exactly this rare variant?

"AVG on shield in oak wreath", R3 (=unique), citing Schenk-Behrens 76, 1998, 186.

Oh yes. I overlooked that entry. 1393 it is.

It's only a matter of time before all R3 coins are rated R2!

Looks like a laurel wreath on the rev., not an oak wreath, but that may just be a mistake in RIC, not a new variety!
