Clean it or leave it?
« on: March 03, 2016, 04:16:42 pm »
This coin arrived today. I am undecided on what to do with it, clean it or leave it. I believe the "desert patina" is natural rather than applied, but it is still actually dirt rather than a true patina. Thought I would ask what some of you thought.

It can be improved, BUT unless you are expert at mechanical cleaning, I strongly recommend you leave it as is and experiment with much lower grade coins.

I think the dirt nicely highlights the features.

Nice coin - I would save it for when you have already cleaned at least 50+ uncleaned coins from A-Z on your own.  The face is all that I would attempt if it was mine.

Well, here it is a day later. Couldn't resist when I noticed some of the dirt flaking.

Nice coin, but I'd have left some of the desert patina

Yeah I may have left some of the sand to highlight too.

However, (it's a dark coin so it's hard to tell) it does seem that you cleaned it carefully. I don't see any scratches or gouges that probably didn't exist previously, so... Although dark, it looks like you did a good job!

It almost looks like there are bits of the silvering remaining.  Is that the case or is it a trick of the light?

Any chance of an image of the other side?

Here is the reverse. Yes there is some silvering remaining on the obv.
