Caligula Denarius
« on: September 29, 2015, 11:51:50 am »
Hi All,

I just received this Caligula denarius that I purchased here on Forvm (thank you Joe). I have been trying to put together a set of the 12 caesars in silver. I had read that Claudius and Caligula would be the most difficult to find and purchase. I am very excited to have this coin. I know it is quite worn, but I believe that the Caligula portrait is quite striking. I find his portrait to be quite different in style from many other emperors.

I now have 4 coins left to complete the set: Tiberius, Galba, Titus, and Domitian.

Thanks for viewing my post.

The difficult work is done. The final four should be relatively easy.

Now that the coin was discussd here, a short note. I have attended the NYINC every year since 1996 - or to be exact every time it was held, as once it was moved to January from December and that year skipped because of that. We all know why.
Anyway, this is the only moderately priced "lower grade" Gaius denarius I ever saw on the floor. Another one I picked from an auction around 1997. These things are really rare!

Very nice!  It deserves a better picture!  Why not use Forum's pic?

Thanks Jay GT4,

I agree that the photo could be much better. However, there is no option in the gallery to replace photos. I would have to erase the entry completely and if I did I would lose the comments in the listing.

I can, however, upload the Forvm image to this post.

I think you would get more comments with a better photo  :).  Posts the new pic and wait until there are more views and comments to delete the other one  ;D. I'll leave a new comment!

Hi orf,

Wow!!! A Caligula denarius. Those are rare.

Congratulations on acquiring a nice example of a rare coin!!!

My favorite Caligula denarius is the issue with a portrait of Augustus on the reverse. I'd love to own one someday, but I don't think I'll ever be able to afford it.

Thanks Meepzorp,

I really like the one with the Augustus reverse as well. I also like mine because it has the Agrippina reverse. It is really neat to have both Gaius and his mother on the same coin.

The 12C in silver?  That's a steep mountain to climb.  Congratulations!  It sounds like you're at or near the summit and it should be mostly downhill from here.

That coin has the right wholesome look for a well circulated piece, in my opinion.

The rarity alone would make it worth having, but rarity combined with decent eye appeal is a sweet cake with just the right frosting on it.

Sorry for the lame pastry metaphor.  I tried for better but came up short.

Rarity and eye appeal are like peanut butter and jelly?  No, that's worse.

Anyway, you know what I mean.  Good job.

@Lordmarcovan

Thanks for the kind comments. I have just bought 2 more for the set. I bought a denarius of Galba and one of Tiberius. I will post them once I receive them. It is exciting to get near the end of this quest. It has been an interesting road so far.
