HUNGARY-what mint?
« on: November 13, 2013, 02:45:50 pm »
I believe it should be
Hungary, Ladislaus III (1201-1205), AR Dinar
But I havent found any reference about the mint.
Is there any information available somewhere?

The coin was tentatively issued by Istvan II (1116-1131). It is Hussar 76, Rethy 65, Unger 42. Mintmarks did not appear onthe coins of this era.

Thank you! Does it mean , that these issues were minted in different mints and its impossible to identify what mint has produced this coin?
I have mentioned a small irregularity on the coin. On avers  there is a small "T"  in sector 9/12. Could it be just defect or something else? Other sector have a small cross in that place.

The small T is actually a poorly formed cross, as in the other quadrants of the coin.

The coin was minted at Esztergom, which was the only mint operating in Hungary at the time.

It is a nice coin.

Hi!

Otherwise Stkp's right, but these funds are very many variants, as shown in the attached picture.
These versions do not mintmark but so-called "sigla" variations.
These studies are just now publishing in the early Hungarian researchers to exchange the Kiss-Toth.
This coin have more than 120 variation, as shown one page of this severall example.
Best regards

As Quadrans points out, there are numerous sigla appearing on this and many other early Hungarian coins.  The sigla are not mintmarks, although they are control marks used by the minters.  The meaning of any individual sigle (is that the singular of sigla?) is not known.

I try to identify the specific sigle appearing on my coins based on the Kiss-Toth published articles when I have access to the articles, which is sporadic.

Stkp & quadrans,

Can you point me to the direction of those published articles?  I only have one or two of those articles and hence I am missing several? of them.  Do any of you speak/read Hungarian?

Thanks,

SpongeBob

I think this is an interseting mistake on this coin not a sigla.
The four crossess are seems to be static part of Unger 42 coin so the T instead of cross is a speciality.
