Denarius Brutus EID MAR/ Fake or genuine ?
« on: November 11, 2010, 03:32:07 am »
Good morning  :-)

Here is a new coin, probably "errare humanum est, sed perseverare diabolicum est", bought recently in France...

Weight: 4,1 g, die axis: 6 h

I'm worried this coin is a cast fake, having indeed bought it as genuine...

I did not find same dies for this coin after long researches, but the thin grainy surface seems for me a bad sign

Waiting for your advice

Kind regards

prom'

Do you really think that this could be a genuine EID MAR?
You should have used the fake reports for your research.

Out of all the coins out there the fake/real ratio for this particular type must be the worst.

Thanks for the confirmation, because I wasn't quite sure!

Many thanks for your answers....

So, for the collectors (like me :-(  ) that are not very connoisseurs, here is a coin that has been doctored a lot, difficult to identify as a forgery without the help of the Fake Ancient Coins Report of the Forum...

It is difficult to use constantly a computer at a Coin Fair....but more and more important...

Here are the "Before-After" for this coin

Best regards

I agree that it's a good idea to check the Fake Reports, but in this case it is NOT difficult to identify as a forgery even if you never saw the undoctored coin. Neither piece look remotely like a denarius of Brutus. In fact the style of the Antiqaunova replicas (which these are) are made NOT to look like the real coins.

If you find that difficult to see, I recommend you do not buy anything at all on eBay for a couple of years, because much of what you buy will be similar fakes. Buy from Forum or VCoins dealers.

You will not find an Eid Mar at a coin show for cheap. Don't let greed cloud your judgement and don't overestimate your abilities to spot fakes and you'll be fine.

Don't buy anything rare from anyone except a reputable dealer like FORVM until you know exactly what you're doing. Coins like this are only likely to come from top dealers, and real ones will never be underpriced.

I can't come close to affording one, but I would NEVER purchase this coin from anyone except dealers of the highest reputation. I would even avoid many auction houses.

Go for the cheaper emperors at first; the Constantines, Gallienus, or Claudius Gothicus. You're not going to find many fakes - there are a few - there's enough interest for a lifetime's collecting, and you won't lose too much on a coin even if it is a fake.

I would like to repeat what others have said, don't give up on collecting ancient coins.  I too have bought fake coins as the real thing and it's very discouraging.  But I consider it all a part of the learning experience.

When buying coins in the future do as the others have advised and you can't go wrong.  If you have a question about a coin don't be affraid to turn to this forum it has some very informed members who are extremely generous with their knowledge.  In time you'll discover that the rewards for collecting ancient coins far surpass the negatives.

Keep on collecting!
