Carausian Quinquennalia

Hi all,

A heavily encrusted coin but of some interest.

[IM?]CARAVSIVS[PFAVG?] Draped (and cuirassed?) bust right

VOTIS QVINQVEN[N...?] Carausius standing left receiving victory from Roma seated left.

The mintmark appears illegible

Vaguely similar to a coin listed in RIC (V.2, no. 1095) with the same reverse type but legend VOTA QVI CAE, with mintmark given as MX

Hi,

I believe that the exergue mark is MX (it is on the other two known to me). Whilst this may seem aberrant at first for something like MLXXI or MC I think the best interpretation is MVLTIS X.

Well, the Multis X aurei are London and with the absence of other evidence I would probably go with London.

Just taken another detailed look at this coins in my trays. Ithought it had read ROMA CONS, however, what I thought was ON at the top of the coin is actually QVI:

Obv"IMP CARAVSIVS P AV"
Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right
Rev "[VO]TA QVI C[AE]"
Roma seated on shield left
-/-//[MX?]
RIC - (cf1095)

Curiously on this specimen we don't have the standing figure of the emperor, only the seated Roma.
