Attribution of a Diocletian from Egypt
« on: May 09, 2010, 02:47:09 pm »
EgyptDiocletian (284-305 A.D.)
Ae potin Tetradrachm, struck at Alexandria. Dated year 2 (= 285-286 A.D.)
Obv:  Α Κ ΓΟΥΑ Λ ΔΙΟΚΛΗΤΙΑΝΟC CΕΒ, laureate draped bust, right.
Rev:  Eagle standing left, head right, wreath in beak, L-B to sides

Can anybody provide me with Milne, Curtis and/or Emmett numbers?

Also, I would appreciate a translation of the obverse legend.

Thanks

Hi,

to complete the statement of Potator II :

- Geissen 3 209
- Dattari 5 792
- Milne 4 787

Translation of the legend : A(vtokrator) K(aesaros) Gaïos Val(erios) Diokletianos Seb(astos)  (which is the translation in Greek script of "Imperator Caesar Caius Valerius Diocletianus rex").

Stkp:

Just a couple notes.

Curtis did not have your coin. The title has K(AESAR) and not the expanded genitive form which smendes gave. Sebastos is better translated as the title "Augustus".
