Help with Silver Coin ID
« on: February 04, 2023, 11:49:23 pm »
I've looked at 100's of pics and can't seem to find this one.  Approximately 25mm in diameter and 2mm thick.  A bit unusual with the left portrait.  I'm hoping someone knows what it is.

The type is a celtic tetradrachm from the Boii:

But this type is extremely rare, so I am not able to judge if it is genuine or not, but I am skeptical :-\.

Edit: The Berlin collection has also some of these together with some bibliographic references:

Edit again  :) : All of the known coins use the same reverse die, but a different one than on the coin here. So it is probably a fake :(.

Many casting beads evident particularly on the reverse--a modern fake.

Thanks guys!  Seeing the definition of the real examples makes it easy to see that it is a fake.  Too bad, but it is what it is.

Just to add, the edge has been filed as well to hide the casting seam.  :-[
