Pertinax Sestertius Fake?
« on: March 22, 2017, 11:08:26 am »
Hello and Greetings from Germany! This is my very first post on this forum which was recommended to me because of the "outstanding specialists" here  ;)

I bought the Pertinax Sestertius pictured above (30,5 mm; 22,73 gr) from a dealer in October 2016 and now noticed that an almost identical specimen,
pictured below (30,5 mm, 23,40 gr) was sold by [REMOVED BY ADMIN] in December, 2014.

The seller has not told me yet when and where he acquired my coin but stated that is must be two different genuine coins.
That cannot be considering the similarities.

So there seem to be only two possibilities: Is this the very same coin or are one or both cast fakes???

Thank you for your help!!!

They appear to me to be cast fakes from the same mold, but are two different coins.
One man's opinion.

Both of them look cast. I have seen another one of these. It looked even more obviously fake in hand.

Thank you for your assessment, Joe  :)
May I ask when and where you encountered that further specimen, if it had the exact same flan shape,
and what (apart from this similarity) makes my coin look obviously fake in your eyes?

Thanks, Julius

I think it looks soapy.  I believe I see pearls.  I also think the obverse looks to have a slightly raised edge around much of the rim

Thanks, Joe!
It doesn´t FEEL soapy, though  :)

I see pearls.

What are those? (sorry, I´m an absolute beginner)

I also think the obverse looks to have a slightly raised edge around much of the rim

Is that a problem? Most of my Sestertii from that era seem to have that...

May I ask when and where you encountered that further specimen you mentioned, and if it had the exact same flan shape?

Cheers, Julius

A good start to answer your questions is here: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/thumbnails.php?album=14

In the Fake Reports is an example section of different methods to producing forgeries.

However the best way is to handle genuine coins, a lot of them, and if you can't, rely on individuals that do handle many genuine coins.

Assuming the field of the die was flat, as it should be, how and why would there be a raised rim around and between the letters ELV on the obverse?

See the fake coin reports study images for pearls.

I encountered the other specimen very recently. When I said I had seen "another one of these" it necessarily meant that it had the same flan shape.

Thank you so much for the link! Browsing those pictures and comments makes me question the authenticity of a handful of other rare Sestertii in my collection   >:(. I´ll post my Pupienus and my Diadumenianus here soon just to be sure(r)

Thanks, Joe! I guess the one you saw was only one of many examples around. This one here was now reported to me as being sold in October 2016 also. I guess that takes away any rest of doubt I had  :'(

Oh my, this hobby is letting you down sometimes...
