Vespasian Civil War Denarii Coins OTD
« on: July 22, 2021, 05:41:38 am »
Over the past week I've posted in my gallery several extremely rare Vespasianic denarii struck near the end of the Civil War of 69 at an uncertain mint. Instead of clogging up the discussion board with multiple threads I decided to present them all at once. IMHO, each one is deserving of COTD status.

Thank you so much for taking the time to look at these fantastically intriguing denarii!

David, RIC 1382, your description alludes to there being two aguilla but I only see one? Is this an error, or am I mis-reading the reverse?

Great coins, by the way. Really a wonderful grouping to have assembled.

Hello Ron, thank you for the kind comment. Yes, on RIC 1382 there are two aquilae, the one on the right is weakly struck and worn.

Many of these types will not hit the market for at least another generation.  Fantastic acquisitions David.

I'm not certain. My sense is that other examples likely exist in private collections. Possibly mis-atteibuted. New denarii are also found in large quantities every year by metal detectorists. Hope springs eternal :).

There are several coins (R5's) that I hold out hope will turn up in quantity in a new hoard - lol.
