2 Buckles
« on: February 14, 2013, 09:12:14 pm »
I've had these for years also.  One definitely a buckle, looks to be Roman but interestingly has a piece of the leather belt still attached!  The leather is also stitched with a copper wire.  Possibly Medieval rather than Roman?

The other probably a cavalry mount of some sort.  Still has the rivet through the bronze plate.

Both with great patina.

Any help would be appreciated.

Carbon dating :)

 :D  It's a possibility.

Well I'm waiting for my books to arrive so I can date it stylistically.  I thought someone may be able to point me in the right direction before they arrive.

Wow.  Very interesting.

I think the top might indeed be medieval.  I have seen images of that buckle type before but can't remember where.

What a great item though.  Copper alloy buckle, iron tongue, leather belt (I assume rather mineralized) with copper wire edging.  Great item.

The second is also a mystery.  Never seen that double rectangular buckle before and linked to an oddly shaped plate.

What books are you getting.  I have a couple of UK books, one on detector finds and one on Roman buckles and belt plates, and then a couple of Museum of London medieval collection handbooks but that is all for buckles.
