ID help please. Roman, Constantine II.
« on: September 13, 2015, 03:33:59 pm »
Hi guys,

I have a coin I am trying to find an exact match for but am having no luck.

Obverse legend: CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C
Reverse Legend: __(?o?)R __EXER_ ITVS (GLORIA EXERCITVS) SMNS

So from what I gathered this coin was minted at Nicomedia. I can find similar coins but the mint mark is not the same. The only one I found that was almost exact has the mint mark described as SMNB.

Am I reading something wrong here?

Thanks

your attribution to Nicomedia is correct; the last letter represents the officina (workshop) responsible for producing the coin and so coins with the same reference number can have differences in the mint mark.

Your coin's 'S' represents the Greek letter stigma = 6th workshop, whereas the B of the coin on Wilwinds = beta, or second workshop. See this link for a bit more information:

Hi Merinda,

thank you for the reply.

So would it be safe to say this coin was minted in the second workshop

where mine was in the 6th.

Both being the same coin just a different shop?

Yes, you have it correctly, same coin, different workshop.
