ID please Roman provincial AE22
« on: August 24, 2013, 09:57:13 am »
Can you help identify this Roman Provincial Coin?
I assume from the era of Gordian III but it has defeated me.
Obverse - left side not visible. Then possibly  :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Nu: :Greek_Iota: :Greek_Nu: :Greek_Upsilon_2:???
I think the reverse reads  :Greek_epsilon: :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Mu: :Greek_Iota::Greek_Omega: :Greek_Mu:
21.6mm  5.1gr  axis 6hr
Thanks

The E is a C - This is from Samos in Ionia

I think this is not Gordian III but Elagabalus. And I agree - from Samos.

Thanks for the assistance could the reverse be Artemis holding bow or Hermes standing left holding purse?  I cannot get any hits on the id as yet.

As this coin  is from Samos this should be Androcles (?).

This type is listed under a couple of different descriptions Female figure/Amazon/ Artemis? standing left holding wreath and septre/palm.   It seems to appear from Commodus at least through Decius.  The key will be to clarify the obverse legend better.

Thanks for your suggestions.
Still trying to resolve the obverse without much success.  Apologies for the poor image.
I have laurate, draped possibly young head right I think it reads (similar to)
????? :Greek_Nu: -  :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Nu: :Greek_Iota: :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Upsilon_2: :Greek_Nu:  :Greek_epsilon: :Greek_Iota: :Greek_Nu: :Greek_Nu:  not sure if it is V or N in the middle.
Thanks

As for me - I see clearly  :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Nu: :Greek_Tau: :Greek_Omega: :Greek_Nu: :Greek_epsilon: :Greek_Iota: :Greek_Nu: :Greek_Omicron: :GreeK_Sigma:
And the portrait of Elagabalus...

Wildwinds has this with the reference.

Severus Alexander (222 - 235) Bronze. 11.39 g. of Samos, Ionia.
AVT K M AVR ALEXANDROC, laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right.
SAMIWN, warrior walking right, looking back, holding shield,
foot on prow.  BMC 278. [/i]

I cannot find a Elagabalus match on the reverse but they are obviously from the same era.  Thanks to all.
