Rudrasimha I?
« on: July 10, 2011, 10:25:34 am »
Morning all. I have taken an interest in Indian coinage of late and while facinating, I am learning that attributing these guys (properly) is giving me as much of a headache as provincials did when I first started them, with less online refences to choose from!
Anyway, enough complaining...what I have here (at least it was sold as) is a drachm of Rudrasimha I. Where I am having trouble is with the reverse legend matching up with his regular reverse legend as found on http://coinindia.com/galleries-rudrasimha1.html . Well, that and the fact that it is a small flan and most of the obverse legend was unstruck...and the fact that there is no crecent on the left side of the hill (unstruck? worn off? never there?) as is clearly evident on the coins illistrated on the site.
So...in short I am stuck. Any help would be fantastic!

In my eyes it is Rudrasena II.

For identification of western kshatrapas I use the following lists:
http://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=57426
http://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=57427
http://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=57708

On plate XXI it is the number 4.

With the list of numerals you can identify perhaps even the exact year of issue. But this is your turn now  ;).

I have a similar one, if it may be of some help. They are hard to attribute IMO.

Thanks guys! (and I am with Mat!!! sanskrit does not mesh in my mind!)

Altamura, those links are fantastic. I should be able to puzzle through attribution from there! Thanks!
