Title: Identification Links
Post by: peterpil19 on October 29, 2006, 04:15:35 am
FORVM members may already be familiar with the non-commercial online references below, but I thought it would be helpful espeically to new members seeking IDs to have a consolidated list in this section? I could not find such a list anywhere on forum. Does anyone else think this is a good idea? If so, can I suggest this post be stickied and new sites added when requested? I am sure I have missed some, so please feel free to add them.

I find this very useful:

Any past auction come up.  Now before you say not auctions, help identifying, it is quite easy to need a new database of coin photos to look through once you know the emperor and type of coin.   This is very helpful in that respect and yes you do see the going cost of the coin.

Two databases to identify listed and unlisted late roman coins.

First, nummus-bible-database including a search engine and RIC references, that lists late roman coinage from AD313 to AD476. Currently more than 18800 LRC listed. Note that you can contribute to improve it with your own collection.

Then, siliques.fr, a siliquae database including a search engine for late silver coinage from AD337 to AD476. Currently 1285 sliquae listed in.

Once again, for those who like Late Roman Coins, the Guillaume's (Dardanvs) Valentinian site is not really an identification site, but information an pictures included in allow to identify most of this emperor coinage.

For Parthian coin collectors it may be useful to know that a Sellwood catalog based identification of silver drachm is available in two forms.

Either you can use a web page for it: https://mrcollector.eu/parthia/ (https://mrcollector.eu/parthia/)

Or if you have an Android mobile phone, download the free app from Google Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.mrcollector.parthiandrachm (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.mrcollector.parthiandrachm) If link doesn't work search for the name: Parthian Drachm

Tamas

Here are links that I have on file.  I am sure that my list is incomplete so I will await further links from other forum members.

I think I can better summarise the list based on which to use under which circumstances. So someone starting an ID can consult the list and it is self-explanatory which to try first.

The collection of the Berlin museums with about 18000 ancient coins online is very helpful, especially for greek coins. It has a lot of rarities online you will find nowhere else, e.g. many Imhoof-Blumer plate coins, or the Reglin plate coins from Priene. Unfortunately you have to use german search terms.

Dear All,

Please continue to post links which you consider to be helpful.

Can you please also post any links to standard references which are lawfully available electronically (e.g. on archive.org, or google books) not already covered earlier. If there is a numiswiki article which already contains the link, then just state the name of that reference and the areas of coinage it covers e.g. Dattari for Alexandrian coinage.  If the numiswiki article does not contain the link, then please state that in your post, or even better, add it to the article itself.

Thanks.

Can any members, particularly, the more experienced members, please share thoughts on how they would like to see this section categorised - ideally in a way that is scaleable as links are added in future.

The American Numismatic Society Hellenistic Royal Coinages http://numismatics.org/hrc/ (http://numismatics.org/hrc/).

In a post by the Numismatic Bibliomania Society in their E-Sylum of June 2, 2019, https://www.coinbooks.org/v22/club_nbs_esylum_v22n22.html (https://www.coinbooks.org/v22/club_nbs_esylum_v22n22.html) you can see where the ANS announced the launch of a new online resource, Hellenistic Royal Coinages (HRC). The HRC covers Hellenistic coinage from ca. 323 to 31 BC. This site currently includes the coins struck by Alexander the Great and successor states, like the Seleukids and Ptolemies. Notably, the new HRC website serves as a "Union Catalogue" of existing online resources devoted to Hellenistic coinages. Users can search across all these sites simultaneously.

These sites include:
PELLA (http://numismatics.org/pella/ (http://numismatics.org/pella/)), focused on coins naming Alexander the Great
Seleucid Coins Online, SCO: (http://numismatics.org/sco/ (http://numismatics.org/sco/))
Ptolemaic Coins Online, PCO: (http://numismatics.org/pco/ (http://numismatics.org/pco/)).

A future version could include other Hellenistic dynasties including the Antigonid, Attalid, and Bactrian dynasties.

2022 Update:
Bactrian and Indo-Greek Coinage, BIGR: (https://numismatics.org/bigr/ (https://numismatics.org/bigr/)).
