Another Owl

I don't know if this one has been discussed here:

[Broken link removed]

The zero-feedback seller also has an Antiquanova replica of a Lysimachos tetradrachm up for auction as an authentic coin, among others.

It looks like some people have retracted their bids but not newer bidders.

This coin is either a complete fake or it has been severely tooled (recut hair and eye of Athena and wing of the owl).

It's a well documented fake.  See the Archaic & Classical Greek fake reports, number 43.

I don't know that I'd I'd say that its inclusion here would make this a well documented fake. But it's good to know that it was documented here, at least another version of it, same die but different strike and flan. FORVM remains an excellent resource for this and other matters.

I don't believe this fake was documented in Counterfeit Coin Bulletin/Bulletin on Counterfeits, and I don't believe I've seen it documented in print elsewhere. I believe from the styling it's another of these Lebanese School fakes, also called Beirut School fakes. The bidding is up to $255. The current high bidder seems to be an Owl specialist, looking at his feedback.

He Reid,

I agree.  This coin is a fake for the reason I pointed on another coin discussion group.

Reid,

Look closely at the owl's wing on both the Ebay auction as well as the fake report.  These are undoubtedly the same.

I've learned that the seller has been contacting underbidders, offering the "coin" to them. For those who do this, this might be a good time to contact "winning" bidders as well as underbidders.  Look at this zero-feedback seller's other auctions too.
