Scan doesnt do it justice, its far nicer in hand. the patina is one of the finest ive seen, a deep, matte dark green.

I'd really love to see an empress with this particular patina.  The coin almost has that "blued steel" look with highlights of "rust colored sand" patination.

I've posted this coin elsewhere, but for purposes of convenience I want to post it here, for I have only the one with this particularly intensity.

You asked for it.... ::) Finest type of patina.  The strong point which you can't see in a picture is that unlike most patinas which have a "soft" texture, this is glass like.

It's good to see the variety which is accumulating!

I've posted elsewhere my Claudius II Gothicus with its pumpkin orange-red Syrian patina, so I won't duplicate it even though it is superb, I think, but here is another Syrian example of a somewhat darker sort, a Theodosius I AE2.

This Elagabalus sestertius has a nice glossy multicolored patina, although hard to tell from this scan. And I bought it here at Forvm! :)

I have a few really nice 'sand patina' type coins, but my gut on my particular coins (not the one above, which is very nice) is that the patina is artificial so not going to post those. :)

Edited to add: by 'not natural' I mean artificially applied in this day and age.

I just don't consider a few of the ones that *I* have natural. Mostly because the seller who sells them has the exact same patina on every one of his coins, no matter the location. He's a big name, so I won't name him here (especially since I have no proof)-but it's quite easy to spot one of his coins. I even got one from him that had a thumbprint smear in the gluey dirt - I removed it.
He does have some rare coins, so I buy them anyway. :)

And one more, a pretty little AE17 of Philip II of Macedon, 359-336 B.C,. a silver/green/blue against bronze-gold....

Ignacio, that Gordian and the Pietas are particularly attractive!  Those are specimens that would stand out in any collection....  Thanks for sharing them with us.

I been experimenting with Jerome's method of using an aluminum-foil covered cylinder, and I notice that colors seem to be enhanced.  I haven't been covering the top of the cylinder, though, which is about five inches in diameter.  This Vespasian As appears almost black to my eye, but the scans show there is more color than I had suspected.

Nice scan, but I'd wonder about the ethics of using it to sell the coin if it looks almost black as you say. I've been trying a cylinder from one of those packs they sell 50 blank CD-R's in, with silver foil round half its circumference to try to get some control over the lighing direction. Here's a scan of a nice very dark green Constantine I follis, done with the lid down.

And a third time, with the cylinder. Ignore the reflections; I'd have to chop the top off if I was going to use it regularly. So far I'm not convinced its making that much difference, though the contrast is better in this one..

My gut feeling is that this patina had a little 'help', but it's attractive anyways and was dirt cheap so I kept it :)
