Anyone interested in FREE Ancient Numismatic Books?
« on: July 11, 2009, 01:57:54 am »
I've got over 150 books on the subject of Ancient Coins in PDF format, all of which are in the public domain (out of print or expired copyright). Of these books are many of the British Museum Catalogs. All have been scanned from old library editions by various sources like Microsoft of the Google book project. All together, I have around two gigabytes of numismatic resources. Would anyone be interested in these, and would Forvm be willing to host the files? Maybe on NumisWiki? This is a vast library of information that is not readily available to the average collector, and could be made available for free - so collectors of ancient coins can spend their money on coins rather than the thousands of dollars it would take to compile a reference collection of this magnitude. There are no current books. Most are over 100 years old, but still of great value to the collector of items that are thousands of years old. Please let me know if anyone is interested (and Forvm is willing) and I'll be happy to upload the files to this site. Thanks!!

doobie, this is a quote directly from the "Administration Announcements" link.  It is under the thread for "Work For FORVM Get Paid in Denarii" and might be of significant interest to you.

"If you have a copy of an ancient coin reference printed before 1924 it is now out of copyright protection.  We will pay for a scanned copy.  Depending on the quality of the reference and the scan, we may pay up to $1000 FORVM dollars."

Best, Noah

Could you provide us with a list?  Many have already been archived in previous FORVM posts.

The BMC catalogs are probably the most useful of these reference books. Others are great reads and informational to ancient collectors in general. I'll post an update when I hear back from Joe.

I guess this thread should have been listed elsewhere. Could I get a moderator to move it to the proper forum?
Thanks!

Perusing through the Forvm boards, I just notice the online digital listings of the DIGITAL LIBRARY NUMIS which links to many, if not most of the books that I have listed here, as well as countless others that aren't listed here, which are downloadable from other websites. Therefore my request seems to be a moot point, unless the Forvm just would like to host these files so they can be accessible from one location. Up til now, I never saw or knew of this resource for ancient coin references. It's a great site - check it out:

http://members.ziggo.nl/tverspag/NUMIS/

Otherwise, if there is something in this list that you can't get, and want, let me know and I'll see if I can send it to you.

BTW - Joe, thanks for this great website and the plethora of information I have obtained here at Forvm.

Here's an update:

Joe has agreed to host this information here on FORVM. I have just finished uploading 163 volumes (2.3 Gigabytes) of ancient numismatic reference material to the FORVM website. In the coming days, I will be adding the text files. My hope is that these reference works will be searchable as they are added to the Numiswiki site. As this is a massive undertaking, it will probably be a while before the books become available online.

They're up and available for download! That's great! All these books are in PDF format. I'm working on the text files to the books right now and should have them uploaded today, after I get back from my classes. I'll have to grade some exams, but afterward I think I should have time to finish this project too.

Enjoy!

I've added a few more books to the list of available references on FORVM. In addition to the books already listed above, these titles are now available for download on this site:

1833 Classical Dictionary

Catalog of Greek Coins in the British Museum - Sicily

Catalog of Indian Coins in the British Museum - Muhammadan states of India

Catalogue of coins of the sháhs of Persia in the British museum

Catalogue of Oriential Coins in the British Museum - Mohammedan Dynasties

Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography Vol 1

Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography Vol 2

Historic notices of towns in Greece, and in other countries, that have struck coins (1826

Silver Coins of England - Hawkins

The coin collector's manual - Humphreys Vol 1

The coin collector's manual - Humphreys Vol 2

Also the plain text files have been uploaded to their own folder, although these are OCR conversions that are full of computer garble. Their main use would be to provide a search function rather than as a substitute text for reading.
