Tranquillina, Poseidon - but which mint?
« on: December 27, 2006, 03:27:16 pm »
Here's another that's stumped me.  I can read the reverse legend fairly well, but it doesn't seem to fit any cities I can find.  I've tried Hanne's database with little luck.

The coin is of Tranquillina and measures 20.4 mm and 3.95 g.

The reverse is Poseidon standing left holding trident and dolphin, foot set on rock. There is something below the dolphin hand, but I can't quite make it out.  The reverse legend appears to be C (epsilon) VNI(epsilon)P - ONTOC?? I (omega) N in field.  Any of the Cs could be epsilon, and the I could be a gamma.

Any help determining this city would be appreciated,
Tom

CYNFEPONTOC KYMAIWN

Hi Luigi,

Thanks, I had thought Cyme as well.  But there is an adittional letter before the first C and where I have two ?? there should be four letters.  It's hard to envision four letters in the space of two.  But you're probably right.

Any idea of a catalogue number?

Thanks,
Tom

Hello Tom,

of course i can't read what's in place of ?? or at the beginning of the inscription, but all others seems to fit. This magistrate's name is listed in Munsterberg for Tranquillina at Cyme and this is why i suggested this mint.
I would guess some other combinations of mint/magistrate/title do exist such asĀ  AYP CYNFEPONTOC TO B KYMAIWN

I'm sorry I don't have a reference for your coin.

Luigi
