Julia Domna, Emesa or Laodicea?
« on: July 13, 2021, 04:27:59 pm »
Am I hesitating to decide if this Domna coin was made in Emesa or Laodicea?
Does anyone have any ideas?
After by some experts are Laodicea, but the others and the style look like Emesa...(My first thought was Emesa!)

Julia Donna denarii if Laodicea typically have a loop of unique fabric at the neckline that this coin does not exhibit. I would suggest likely it is emesa.

Seems to be same dies as Barry Murphy Severan Denarii no. 436, a coin that is now in my collection.

Barry correctly attributed the coin to "Laodicea", that is the IMP II series for Septimius. Indeed that same unusual FORT R AVG rev. die was also used with an IMP II obv. die of Septimius, a combination that is also represented in my collection.

Great info Curtis! Any insight why Julia's neckline does not have the fabric loop so often associated with Laodicea?

I think the loop occurs mainly on Julia's new-style coins. Quadrans' acquisition is still old style.

It isn't the only die of this type for Septimius. I have a different FORT R AVG reverse die from the IMP II series.

I also have an IMP II, FORT R AVG - Hilaritas type
