A New Acheloios?
« on: July 01, 2021, 03:22:11 pm »
9mm, .75g.

I’m leaning towards man-faced bull with the coin in hand.  However, if someone knows the type please let me know.  Similar to bronzes from Parion (Mysia) featuring a bull / temple.  This wouldn’t be the first case where some varieties feature a regular bull and others a man-faced bull

Reverse pics are posting sideways—at least I think it is sideways.

In the first two pictures the reverse looks like a grain ear, but not so in the third picture.

But if it is a "grain ear" it might be an Onkia like this.

(Ok, I know,  two "might be"s  :-\

Thanks for taking a look. I’ll try and get better photos of the reverse—I don’t believe it is a grain ear and I’m certain it isn’t from Iaitas.  Unfortunately, the coin is very tough to photograph and my poor photography skills don’t help.

Here is the Parion coin I mentioned before.

Oriented this way it could be a Calathus—originally a weaved basket of sorts that had a wider top and worn like a hat. Apparently it was a symbol of fertility which would pair nicely with Acheloios.

Hi Nick,

I have a similar Parion coin (last coin):

On my example, the bull is butting.

Hi Nick,

I agree with you that it looks like a MFB.

Regarding the reverse, as soon as I looked at your photos, I immediately thought that it looked like an altar. My Parion coin confirmed that suspicion.

However, your last post regarding the possibility that it is some sort of basket may be correct.

Hi Nick,

Assuming that the photo in your reply #4 is oriented correctly, the reverse depicts an altar, with steps before it and a flame on top. There may even be a decoration in the center.

In my eyes it is an altar shown perspectively what I know on coins from BC only from Parion.
Here is an example showing this: https://ikmk.smb.museum/object?lang=de&id=18276479&view=rs

How does the bull look like with the light coming from different angles? Just to avoid that it is only the effect of the lighting  ;).

The coinage of Parion has an abundant number of different types and variants, constantly new ones showing up. So we perhaps will not find a comparable specimen  :-\.

From most angles you can’t make out the face at all, though at those angles it doesn’t look like a clear bull head either.  With the light source shining on the face it is fairly consistent even when you move it a bit. I’ve only used a loupe but perhaps greater magnification would be more conclusive.
