All of these types of reconstructions I have recently seen have the same fault. Faces, facial expressions, eyes - it's all perfect, everything spoils the hair. A few ready-made, very simple hairstyles do not in any way reflect the complex, multi-level structures worn by, for example, Nero or Otho. Looking at Nero I can believe it could be his stable boy, not the emperor himself.

I think things like this are cool, but I would never call them accurate. A lot of the reconstructions I have seen in other contexts look similar, they all use similar software I think. We are never going to really know, I will take the statues or my imagination. While these things can be fun to look at, never do I think they actually look like the person being represented. It literally can never be done, even with a skull. What really struck me was how much more powerful some of the sculptures were than the software generated images.

I agree Virgil, the sculptures are much more compelling.  But it is still fun to see them.  I think Augustus and Nerva are probably the most realistic.  At least I recognized them.
