Newly found arena in Croatia
« on: August 26, 2005, 03:22:25 pm »
Hello friends,
I returned today from a 2 week holiday in Croatia.
I went with the car and drove about 4000 km through the country.
We visited the palace of Diocletian in Split, the ancient town of Salonae (were Diocletian was born, the amphitheatre at Pula, the Venetian fortress of Zadar,...

But the most marvellous thing of the trip was the discovery of a new found arena.
In a little town I met some local people and talking about some interests, they took me to a newly found arena, dating from the time of the Flavians. The archeologists did stop their work, because money ran out :-\. Few people know about the existence of it. Nobody looked after it, not even the police. You could walk freely through it.
All over the place there was roman pottery, fragments of pottery, colums on the ground,...
It was like walking through history, because it was so good as untouched.

I will also post some pics.
Grtz,
Nico

Thanks Lars ;).
It was wonderfull indeed.
I must say, the Balkans do offer a inexpensive holiday with lots of ancient sites to visit.
The Croats are a very kindly people and every where we stayed, we had to drink slivovitsj (some sort of home made vodka) as a welcome ;D.
Next year we will go back for about 10 days to cross the centre of the land (this year we were only for about 4 days in the centre).
Since you are living in Switserland, it's not so far for you. I can recommend it ;).
Grtz,
Nico

I was over there in July 2005: I stayed in Rovinj. I also visited Pula and I was very impressed by its Roman remains, particularly the amphitheatre. I also visited Porec to see the Byzantine basilica of St. Euphrasius which was also impressive. While I recommend Rovinj as a holiday destination to anyone, I hope the region will continue to remain relatively unspoilt by commercialism and over-development.

Ok, I have to teach you... ;D

Slivovits is a schnapps or brandy, distilled from fermented plums. (Sliva = Plum)

Vodka is made from grain or potatoes.

Ziveli!

Hello, Sseverus.

Thank you for the photos!  Incredible.  Question: what town is this?  Where, exactly, were you?  I lived in Croatia years ago and would love to know more about your discovery.  Thank you.
