unknown trachy
« on: August 14, 2011, 07:57:54 am »
Dear friends,
I have problems to catalogue this trachy:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-70362

On obvers I can see full-length figure of Archangel Michael with sword on right shoulder.
On revers: full-length figure of emperor in loros, with trilobate scepter in right hand (left) and military saint (right).
I can not find similar trachy in catalogues.  Maybee emperor on revers is struck on older trachy depicting a military saint? What do you think?
Thank you in advance.
Zbigniew

Very odd - possibly overstruck, but maybe not. Some similarity to S.2284 of Michael VIII, but seems to be different.
In these cases we usually retreat to "provincial issue", but this doesn't say much.

You are right Ross. Very odd coin.
I forgot to add diameter and weight: diameter 22,0/26,3 mm, weight 1,93 gr.
Best regards,
Zbigniew S.

Obverse - similar to obv. of S. 2033. (CLBC 11.12.1)
Reverse - similar to Jordanov, New type IV (CLBC - 11.31.1)

Unknown to me coin or hybride. I believe - a Latin imitative .....
Zbigniew, would you give me photocredit?

Yes, the ruler's short beard and what seems to be a crude legend suggest a (probably late) Latin type. On the hand, most examples of late Latin types are found clipped.
