Aelius AR Denarius OTD...
« on: February 09, 2007, 11:01:10 pm »
I just got this one in today.  I don't have too many high-end (well, at least high-end for me) coins in my collection, so I decided to splurge and get it!  I think I have the attribution correct, but I was unsure if it might be RIC 439 instead of the 438 I think it is.  Anyone with a word of advice here is truly welcome.

Aelius AR Denarius

Attribution: RIC 438, RSC 36, BMC 989
Date: AD 137
Obverse: L AELIVS CAESAR, bare head r.
Reverse: TR POT COS II, Pietas stg. l. sacrificing over altar, PIE-TAS in r. and l. fields
Size: 17 mm
Weight: 3.45 grams

Best, Noah

I think it is indeed RIC 439: "as on No. 438, but Pietas holds a box of perfumes in left hand". Nice coin, I like Aelius portraits, though I don't have any in my collection.

Thanks Lars!  I thought it might be the perfume box, but was unsure because of the wear on the reverse.  I will be making the correction in my notes.

Love the reverse: Pietas really seen from aside! The type was continued for some months for Antoninus and was then replaced by the 'Pietas standing right', which is at most 3/4 right.
Congrats on this nice coin!
