Commodus, Thessalonica, Macedon - need Legend help
« on: March 26, 2023, 03:49:25 pm »
Hello…

I won this Commodus Provincial Bronze. But I am not sure about the obverse Legend. Here the details of this coin from the auction house:

MACEDON. Thessalonica. Commodus (177.192). Ae.

Rev. ΘƐϹϹΑΛΟΝƐΙΚƐΩΝ.
Nike advancing right, holding wreath and palm.

RPC IV.1, 8291 (temp).

Very rare.

Condition: Very fine.

Weight: 13.32 g.
Diameter: 26 mm.

I read the follow obverse legend: AYTOKMAY…

RPC listet a view Variants from this Nike / Thessalonica type.
RPC translate the legends as: AYTOK M AY(R) = Autokrator Marcos Aurelios…

But I am not sure. Autokrator alone, without Kaisaros at this later coinage from Commodus.

I think more as: AYTO K M AY(R)… = Autokrator Kaisaros Marcos Aurelios…

What did you mean? Thanks.
