Commodus interesting heroic bust

(1/1)

timka:
Hi,

This is a denarius of Commodus with a bare chest seen by half. I also suspect there is also an aegis with snakes, but there could be a fold of drapery, it is not so clear. A better specimen is needed to see what it is. Your ideas will be appreciated.

Generally, heroic bust is very rare for Commodus denarii. Three were several rare issues with heroic bust seen from front by half during TR P XI/IMP VII - TR P XII/IMP VIII. But this is TR P VIII/IMP VI, which is out of system.

Ob. M COMMODVS ANTON AVG PIVS: Head of Commodus, laureate, right
, bare bust by half seen from front, with aegis(?)
Rev. TR P VIII IMP VI COS IIII P P: Roma, helmeted, draped, seated left, holding Palladium in extended right hand and spear in left hand

RIC 57 ( bust var)

3g, 18mm, 0'

Thank you for your time.
