New name
« on: March 07, 2022, 06:52:12 pm »
Up until now I was Otlichnik.

That name was based on the yahoo email I have used since circa 1990.  The term otlichnik is Russian for "excellent" or "excellence" and was used for many Soviet army award badges and remains in use by the Russian military today.

I used that term for my email because I studied Soviet history, specializing in the history of the Red Army, from 1988 to 1997.  I have kept it since, though I long ago stopped collecting Soviet military items and sold off my collection which is instead now focussed on Roman coins.

However, as I am now utterly disgusted by the Russian military I will have nothing to do with that term anymore.  I am changing my "handle" on all forums I belong to and ditching that email forever.

Sorry for any confusion.

Good move, Shawn. Completely understandable given the (horrible) circumstances.

Hi SC,

You are doing this for the right reason.

If aliens from Meepzorp's home planet (or galaxy) ever attack Earth, I may need to change my username too. :)

Fortunately, Meepzorp doesn't appear to be war-like at all. He calls the "Howard Stern Show" every now and then, when he passes close to Earth during his journeys through the universe. And he seems to be an affable fellow with a good sense of humor.

Yes, good move, Shawn.  SC makes me think of the Roman Senatvs Consvlto.

As a student living in Europe during the 1970s, I saw the Soviet model up close. In travel to the Soviet Union (including Soviet Kiev), I found few souvenirs apart from the ubiquitous medals. Here's an othlichnik medal I still have. Until now, I had no idea of its meaning. OK, even now I don't have much of any idea of its meaning...

Yes, this is the type of thing I was talking about.

This one was actually for the police.  Otlichnik militisii - excellent or distinguished policeman.  The MOOP at the bottom is from when the MVD - the Soviet Ministry of Internal Affairs, was known as the Ministry for the Preservation of Public Order (MOOP) from circa 1962-1968.

I didn't know the meaning of your old username. I certainly understand your need for a change. We can only hope the Russians find a way to rid themselves of Putin. He is quite a monster.

Hi folks,

I never knew the meaning of his old username either. I always assumed that it was a reference to native Canadian Eskimos.

We don't use Eskimo in Canada anymore, they are called Inuit.

I removed the political discussion. If you think calling Putin a monster and hoping the Russians should get rid of him is politics, then we have different definitions of the term.
