Solidus Valens, new find but what RIC
« on: November 16, 2021, 02:42:54 pm »
Hi all,
I need some help with identifying this new coin find from The Netherlands (province of Gelderland, 22 mm, 4,4 gr.).
It seems to me RIC IX, p. 276, nr. 16c/d, but the mint mark does not match (ANOBS). Is this a variant or am I missing something?
Thanks a lot for any remark!

That's a rosette diadem, so it's 16d.

Yes, you can call it a 16d variant, since the officina letter "S" on your coin is different from the ones recorded in RIC.

ANOBS = An(tioch) Ob(ryzum = pure gold) [made in officina] S.

The officina just indicates which "workshop" within the mint made it.
