Saloninus as Augustus meet Postumus Fides
« on: May 09, 2019, 04:26:15 am »
Some days ago I purchased a coin that I have discussed an year ago in a short article published in an italian numismatic paper: https://www.academia.edu/29069817/Tre_nuovi_antoniniani_a_nome_di_Salonino_Augusto , a sort of update of another previous article published on Numismatic Chronicle (n. 175/2015): https://www.academia.edu/21127701/_A_New_Antoninianus_in_the_Name_of_Saloninus_as_Augustus_in_The_Numismatic_Chronicle_175_London_2015

This coin comes from the Holmes collection (recently sold by CNG 442 e-auction):

The catalogue description says:

Saloninus. As Caesar, AD 258-260. Antoninianus (22mm, 3.62 g, 7h). Contemporary forgery, hybrid with reverse of Postumus. IMP SALON V[ALERI]ANVS AVG, radiate and draped bust right / FIDES MI[LITVM], Fides standing facing, head left, holding two standards. Reverse of Postumus, AGK 21, RIC V 59. Near Fine, even gray brown surfaces, a few minor deposits.

Pedigree: Ex Holmes collection - Ex CNG 442/2019 - Ex Jacquier 40 (16 October 2015), lot 345.

It's not an official issue, but it's still a very interesting piece issued by a local officina during the Postumus reign.

Here the jacquier auction picture: https://www.sixbid.com/browse.html?auction=2249&category=45214&lot=1902474

I have made some pictures of the coin (sorry for the low definition):

I'm not able to understand if it's a cast (as the opinion of mr holmes, the previous collector) or an hammered local issue... have you some ideas about it?
Many thanks!

Unfortunately I don't have anything to add to your analysis, but just wanted you to know I enjoyed your article in Numismatic Chronicle, great work!
