Dear friends of
Nikopolis!
Recently I got this doubtful coin:
Moesia inferior,
Nikopolis asd Istrum,
Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 17, 3.13g, 17.32mm, 135°
obv. AV KAI [CE] -
CEVHROC (or AV K L[ CE])
Laureate
head r.
rev. NIKOPOLI -
PROC ICTR
Herakles, nude, stg. frontal, looking r., resting with l. hand on club and holding r. hand [with lion's
skin] behind back
ref. a)
cf. AMNG I/1, 1386
b)
Varbanov 2317 (AV K L CE)
or #2319 (AV KAI CE
c) not in
Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2017):
rev. No. 8.14.14.17
var.
obv. not listed
The exceptional
portrait, the big eyes, the fact that the
obv. legend reaches only the upper
part of the beard, whereas it usually reaches the l. shoulder, makes it it very doubtful coin. At least a heavily
tooled revers.
What do you think?
Best regards
Jochen
