Another one I missed out on, but feel I need to know more about:
15mm, 2.01g
Obv: Male(?)
head right,
Rev: Bunch of grapes.
The
obverse appears to show traces of
legend, including what seems to be
". . NEIKO . ." behind the
bust.
This may, at first, appear to indicate
Nicomedia, but my
search has yeilded no
results from that city. There are other cities which may begin with the letters
Nico... (Nicopolis, Nicaea, etc.), but they also reveal no matching results with
any of my searches.
Also, the
reverse has traces of "ΠPO.." to the right.
Perhaps there is some suggestion that this could be
Nicopolis ad Istrum,
given that the form of that city's
ethnic includes 'PRO[c'. However, the single
type I have located (in two examples on
acsearch) show the helmeted
head of
Athena, rather than the apparently male (sans helmet)
bust here.
eg:
https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1543354 https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=439889 (these two share the same
obverse die)
Usually I can find a similar
obverse type, or a
reverse die that is close, but
here I cannot find anything sufficiently resembling the coin in question.
Is this something familiar to anyone here? Suggestions welcomed.
I wish these people would stop outbidding me!
Thanks in advance,
Walter
