Gordian III/Lycia, Trebenna/Dionysos
« on: June 04, 2017, 09:49:30 am »

Managed to obtain this rare beauty with a nice provenance.

 2) Lycia, Trebenna
AE??; 27.74 (so i am guessing around AE36)

Obverse: AY KAI MAP ANT ΓOPΔIANOC CE; Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right.
Reverse: ΤΡΕΒΕΝ – ΝΑΤΩΝ; Nude Dionysos standing left, holding cantharus in outstretched right hand and thyrsus in left, panther at feet on left.
Ref: von Aulock Lycia 331 (this coin); BMC 1;
Notes: Ex Mabbott collection sold by Schulman Gallery 11 June 1969, Lot 1949 (spent 20 minutes going through catalog looking for darn coin - not well laid out.); Ex Righetti.

Goes with my small modulus unique example: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=72753.0
