A Slither of Snakes
« on: January 24, 2015, 08:09:22 pm »
some people have an aversion to snakes, but not me. i think they're really cool. apparently so does Molinari, as he thought it'd be a good idea to ssset the ssslithery ssserpents free right here!

snakes are another of those relatively common ancient coin icons, and this time i actually have one or two.
this is one of my favorite coins, a bronze from Eleusis depicting Triptolemus being drawn by a biga of snakes...

I'm actually very afraid of snakes, but these threads are terrific and I'll definitely post my examples!

I don't have my coins photographed (well, I do, but _badly_).
But I would suggest looking at the coinage of Kroton.
where snakes are portrayed but also at times people or animals
(infant Heracles, Apollo, eagle) are depicted attacking snakes.

Why one snake when you can have three in one coin.

See this M.Antony and Octavia tetradrachm . ex Benito coll.

One time my wife's cat, Mitsy, was toying with a baby snake outside while we watched her, and when the snake finally gave up, to my shock, Misty grabbed it in her mouth and started to carry it to us.  I literally threw my wife between me and the snake and ran inside.  I'm not proud of that, but I would do it again.  That's how afraid of snakes I am!

So here are my snakes:

AE 18, Elagabalus, Markianopolis, ca. AD 203-222, Obv: AYTKMAYPANTWNINOK; Rev: MARKIANOPOLITWN around snake emerging from basket, VF. Moushmov 636, Hristova/Jekov No.6.26.5.11 var. (different bust).

MYSIA, Atarneos. Circa 400 BC. Æ 11mm. Laureate head of Apollo right / Forepart of horse right, serpent above. SNG France 129; SNG Copenhagen 25.

And my favorite, with Asclepius:

MYSIA, Pergamon. Circa 133-27 BC. Æ 16mm, Demetrios, magistrate. Obv: Laureate head of Asklepios right. Rev: Serpent-entwined staff of Asklepios. SNG France 1828 ff.

Apparently the use of snakes in healing practices to the Bronze Age, and probably earlier.

okay Enodia, point taken.  let's see if I can do this (I'm usually a fairly low tech kind of guy).  some pics don't have reverses, I don't have obverses and reverses together.  The spread fabric incuse stater is in a cointain, the one with Apollo shooting the python is a british museum electrotype.

And now for the abuse of serpents
at Kroton.

There is also a stater that has the eagle, and the serpent (being attacked).

Sorry I don't have the descriptions with them, everything is in a different place :P

But at least now you can see that serpents, but also their abuse is a major thematic trend in the coinage of Kroton.

If you look at the Krotoniate stater with the barley-ear, tripod and serpent, (2 previous posts) look at the serpent closely.  doesn't the coiled tail of the serpent look like a koppa " :Greek_Koppa:", the middle like a rho " :Greek_Rho:" and the head is the omicron, " :Greek_Omicron:"??  Besides a serpent looking suspiciously like  :Greek_Koppa: :Greek_Rho: :Greek_Omicron:, There is also a full ethnic on the reverse (off the flan of this example).

Here I share an exceptional type:

Caracalla,  AD 197-217
AE 30, 14.52g, 29.71mm, 180°
struck c. 202-205 (due to the portrait)
obv. AV KM AVR CEV - ANTWNINOC
Youthfull beardless bust, laureate, drapery on l. shoulder, r.
rev. OVLPIAC P / AVTALIA / C in three lines
Asklepios, bearded, laureate, head r., nude to hip, holding snake staff in l. arm,
sitting l. between wings of a snake with beard and fishtail, flying in coils r.; his raised r. hand hold the wings.
ref. Ruzicka 616 var (only rev.; obv. with different legend); Mionnet cf. 1084; Moushmov 4235
very rare, good VF

The rev. depiction is unique in numismatics. There are obviously no relations to the snake cults of Thracia. Most probably there are connections to the false prophet Alexander of Abonuteichos (Lukian). There may be a votive tableau in the Asklepieion of Pautalia which includes this depiction. (Ruzicka, Die Münzen von Pautalia, 1933, p.38)

And another snake from the Thracian snake cult: Augusta Traiana, Septimius Severus, Schönert-Geiss 136; Varbanov 1006 (plate coin); Moushmov 2011 (plate coin)

Head of the snake not decorated with nimbus, but with a wreath!

And again 2 types with snake coiled around omphalos:
(1) Nikopolis, Septimius Severus, HrHJ (2013) 8.14.47.10
(2) Bizya, Philipp I, Jurukova 116

Sadly I have no coin from Pergamon!

But these coins have led me eventually to the solution of an old problem of mine. I think it is better to discuss it under "Roman Provincial Coins".

Roman Republic, L. Roscius Fabatus, gens Roscia, Crawford 412/1; Sydenham 915; Roscia  3; Albert 1329; BMC 3394

The rev. shows a scene from the festivity in honour of Iuno Sospita in Lavinium: A young girl is send into a grotto below her temple to feed a snake. Only if she is a virgin she comes up again.
