Please share your coins of Gaza for research
« on: September 13, 2021, 01:35:59 am »
A friend of my is a researcher in Hebrew University who is working on a complete corpus of coins of Gaza under Roman rule. He will greatly appreciate if the members who have (or previously had but still have pictures) Gaza coins would share the images with him, at yoav.farhi@mail.huji.ac.il
If you wish, your collection will be mentioned in the book as a source, or you can remain anonymous. Thank you!

I did, thank you. Should he refer to 'Meepzorp collection, forumancientcoins' as a reference?
By the way, a coin in your collection described as Nicopolis is actually from Diospolis, also a very rare city. Type 8 here: https://www.academia.edu/6811913/Farhi_Y_2008_The_Coinage_of_Diospolis_Lod_in_the_Roman_Period_Israel_Numismatic_Journal_16_pp_140_165
The paper is written by the very same researcher who is now working on Gaza, our world is small ;)

I have also sent photos of my Gaza coins to Dr. Farhi recently, along with a number of lead artifacts, all surface finds from Caesarea Maritima.  These included a miniature lead amphora almost identical to one he was working on from the ancient city of Hebron.  Yoav has published so many articles, and all of them are incredibly interesting and well written.  Most of his work is available in English and can be found by searching his name on Academia.edu.  They cover a wide variety of subjects and are well worth a look!  https://huji.academia.edu/YoavFarhi

Hi AK2,

I am just reading this now because I couldn't log into Forum yesterday. I think the whole site was down.

And I had a very bust day today, so I am just reading your post now. I sleep crazy hours. This is still Tuesday night for me. I didn't go to bed yet.

For security reasons, I like to remain anonymous online. Only a handful of people know my real identity. Your suggestion sounds good to me.

Hi AK2,

Thank you for the correction. I appreciate all the help I can get.

Are you certain it is Diospolis? The dealer attributed that coin, and I copied his attribution. Nicopolis-Emmaus also issued a coin of that same type. Since my coin and the legends are so worn, I was wondering how anyone can be certain.

When a coin is that worn, how do you tell the difference between those 2 cities? Is there something unique and distinctive about it?

Yes, I am quite certain even in this condition, it is a double die match. If you have Sofaer's collection book, it has this type as well (all known examples were struck with the same pair of dies), you can compare it directly, it is Sofaer 7. Diospolis is one of the cities I pay more attention to, so I kinda developed an eye for their style, if you know what I mean. Emmaus coins are similar but still distinctly different. I don't have this type yet, so if you will ever wish to swap let me know, I have some equivalent in rarity and actually better quality Diospolis coins for trade.
Best,
Alex

Hi AK2,

Thank you for the reply. That is exactly the sort of response I was looking for. I didn't want to go through all the trouble of writing up new hand-written tags for my coin, shooting photos of my new tags, processing the photos of the new tags, and editing my website entry unless you were 100% certain.

You are an expert regarding these types of coins just like I am expert regarding certain types of ancient coins:

Greek Italy (Magna Graecia), especially Campania
Augustus
Medieval Italy

No, I don't have Sofaer's book. Most of my reference books are for Italian coins.

Thank you for offering to acquire my coin. However, I am not interested in selling or swapping any of my coins at this time.
