Here are 2 more;the first is a 1531 K-B Hungarian Denar variant under King Ferdinand I. It has a straight sided shield with a rosette above and on each side of the shield. I haven't been able to find this one in any of my references. The other is a very worn (almost slick) 1469 B-cross/horseshoe Hungarian Denar under Matthias Corvinus;Huszar 717,Unger 562e,Rethy II235A,Pohl 216-5. It has an error in the legend PAGRON instead of PATRON.

Hello, Edward :) I'm new around here, so I couldn't comment your coins before.
As an archaeologist doing a research and a catalogue of late-medieval silver coins (mostly Hungarian and Austrian), I must say you have some really interesting pieces here. I especially like the "typos" on some of the coins... I myself encountered misspellings such as PAARONA, VNGONA, UZGAR, PANGARIE, mostly double-struck, but some of them were contemporary immitations.
Nice collection :)
-
The second is a 1485-90 S-W Hungarian Denar under King Wladislaus II;Huszar 724,Unger 569b,Pohl 225,Rethy II238.
Hello again :) I was looking at your nice photos again today, and I noticed for this particular example that it should say Matthias (1458 - 1490), not Wladislaus II (1490 - 1516). According to Pohl 1982, this type was being produced from 1487 to 1490 in Vienna. According to Unger 1974, the production took place between 1485 and 1490. It's interesting how two different types at Unger are one and the same at Pohl, and vice versa...they had very different criteria. I'm sure you know all this, this just caught my eye. :)

The first one is slightly past what is cosidered medieval, but it is a 1614 N-B Hungarian Denar under King Matthias II;Huszar 1142,Unger 871. Some of the copper leeched on to the surface but gives it a nice color.
The second is a 1526 C-Lily with a Gothic C in the mint mark under King Louis II;Huszar 841,Unger 673i,Pohl 255-24.

They are both nice additions, Edward, although I find the Huszar 722 var. to be especially interesting. I have one bearing that mintmark in which the Madonna is not nimbate but the infant Jesus is nimbate. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-46180. Your coin is another variety which, as far as I know, is not recorded. It seems that only those with this mintmark omit this feature.

The first is a 1490 K-Q (Cl) Hungarian Denar under Matthias Corvinus;Huszar 722,Unger 567d,Pohl 223-4. It isn't that scarce,but I had room for it.
The second is a contemporary counterfeit Hungarian Denar from the time of Queen Maria (1382-95);Huszar 569,Unger 443 type,Pohl 114. The legend is totally unmeaning.
The third is a 1373-82 with a Lily-S mint mark under King Louis I;Huszar 547,Unger 432d,Pohl 89-9.

The first one isn't medieval,but the lowest mintage of King Leopold's reign;a 1666 K-B Hungarian Denar,Huszar 1506 and Unger 1110.
The second is a 1470 n-hammer under Matthias Corvinus;Huszar 717,Unger 562m,Pohl 216-13. It is a variant with a circle in the legend instead of the point.
The third one is quite common, but I have room for it;a 1390-1427 Hungarian Denar under Sigismund of Luxebmburg;Huszar 576,Unger 449a,Pohl 117-1.
-
These are variants of the Saracen head denars. They are all 1373-82 Hungarian Denars under King Louis I.
The first has a P_ (P with a stem to the right from the base). As far as I know, this one isn't recorded in the catalogues;Huszar 547var.,Unger 432c var.,Pohl 89-8 var.
The second and third are variations of the legend;I couldn't find either of these in the catalogues. They are both variants of Huszar 547,Unger 432a,Pohl 89-1. The second has the obverse legend on both sides and the third has the rverse legend on both sides.

Hi, Edwards,
Nice coins :),
About King Luis, the P mintmark look legate PL, :)
and the last two coins are interesting, but this type has several legends combination, which is not described the earlier catalogues.
Some same combination also exists the Maria coins too... :) +++ ;)

Thank you,Stkp. It is amazing how many different varieties and legend variations there are.
-
New additions.
1. 1531 eagle wings Hungarian Denar under King Ferdinand I;Huszar 961,Unger 744o. The eagle wings are a little more visible in hand than the picture. Reverse n's in the legend and an x over the crest are traits of the eagle wing denar. Another thing that interferes with the eagle wings is the obverse is double struck and the eagle wings are opposite in the same place as the date.
2. 1471-81 K-PV under Matthias Corvinus;Huszar;Huszar 718,Unger 564e,Pohl 219-5.
3.1470 n-hammers under Matthias Corvinus;Huszar 717,Unger 562m,Pohl 216-13. This variety is the Madonna without stole.

1. 1554 N-C Hungarian Denar under King Ferdinand I variation with points under the Madonna and points and stars in the legend instead of rosettes;Huszar 953,Unger 745l.
2. 1455 B-L/star under King Ladislaus V. I don't see this mint mark in the catalogues,but I do see one with + over the L Huszar 664var,Unger 523var,Pohl 187-2var.
3.1384/85 G-M under Queen Maria with "REGINE UNGARIE" legend variation;Huszar 569var,Unger 443dvar,Pohl 114-4var.

The first is a 1447-52 B-I Hungarian Denar under John Hunyadi with a legend variation TEMPORE.GUBERNATORIS instead of TEMPORE.IO.GUBERNATOR which isn't in the catalogues;Huszar 623var,Unger 486avar,Pohl 177-1var.
The second is a 1440/41 L-P. Hungarian Denar under King Ladislaus V. It is a variation with a point after the P in the mint mark not in the catalogues;Huszar 643var,Unger 494lvar,Pohl 150-10var. I have another one of these but this has slightly better details.
The third is a 1390-1427 S under Sigismund of Luxemburg. It is a variation with the mint mark on the left side of the cross;Huszar 576,Unger 449.mu.Pohl 117-8.

Hi Edward, nice examples,
about the János Hunyadi denar, both of the legends exist, but depends on which privy mark and which date...
because of the position of him...

The first one is a 1383(Huszar and Unger)/1383-85(Pohl) Hungarian Denar under Queen Maria with a lily-lily mint mark;Huszar 566,Unger 442f,Pohl 112-2.
The second is a 1077-95 Hungarian Denar under King Ladislaus I;Huszar 27,Unger 22,CAC/Opitz Vol.1/10.8.b2.1/14. It has a sigla consisting of 2 wedges between the A and U in LADISLAUS.

The third is a 1520 K-G under King Louis II with VNGAR legend variation on obverse;Huszar 841,Unger 673m,Pohl 255-1. It has a blue patina in obverse legend and a pale red in the center.

Hi friends, I'm new to the forum.
I bought this unknown coin that came from Eastern countries (former Yugoslavia).
(http://s15.imagestime.com/out.php/i1186586_DinarLuigiI.png) (http://www.imagestime.com/imageshow.php/1186586_DinarLuigiI.png.html)
From a search in your forum I saw that it could resemble the Hungarian saracen head coin minted during the reign of Louis I of Anjou. On one side of the coin there is a patriarchal cross with random dots. On the other side of the coin there appears to be a saracen head.
(http://s15.imagestime.com/out.php/i1186590_Dirittoconimmagine.jpg) (http://www.imagestime.com/imageshow.php/1186590_Dirittoconimmagine.jpg.html)
The inscriptions on the coin do not appear to be those of Huszár 547 or a Huszár 550.
Already the Angevin king Charles I (1308-1342), father of Luigi instituted a series of mint for the collection of the lucrum camerae tax (delivery of old money to replace it with new production money with the application of a commission for the benefit of the royal coffers) throughout the country: in addition to Buda, Esztergom, Szerém, Csanád and Slavonia also in Körmöcbánya, Szomolnok, Szatmár, Várad, Transylvania and Pécs.
Is it possible that the coin was issued with the consent of King Louis I from one of the vassal states of the Kingdom of Hungary: Wallachia, Banat of Severin, Moldova, Bosnia, Serbia ????????
In the inscriptions we find the following possible letters:
(Cross) ?A????ADVWO(or G or E)AIVO
(Saracen Head) ?HOMHTO????
In some contemporary coins of Wallachia
(http://s15.imagestime.com/out.php/i1186592_Walacchia2.png) (http://www.imagestime.com/imageshow.php/1186592_Walacchia2.png.html)
(http://s15.imagestime.com/out.php/i1186591_Walacchia1.png) (http://www.imagestime.com/imageshow.php/1186591_Walacchia1.png.html)
we find similar inscriptions such as:
………AI WODI…………..
………..WOIDEI………….
……….WAIWOD………..
To indicate a woiwode (voevoda, voivod, vojvoda, voevod, vaivode, wojewoda, voyvoda, voyevoda, woywode, vojvode) a vassal of the king of hungary.
is there any source to consult?

Welcome to the forum, Marco.
It is an interesting coin. Perhaps it is a contemporary counterfeit of a Saracen head denar with a blundered inscription? This might be the case as the metal content appears to be all bronze without even a hint of silver. Of course, hazarding metal content based on a photo is unreliable.
By the way, you would have been best off creating a new topic for the coin rather than tacking it onto Edward's thread.
I am sure that I don't speak only for myself when I say that I hope to see more coins and posts from you.

Hi, Edward, ;) :) +++
Great coins,
One note: the last coin of the first group looks like it has been burned, isn’t such a surface natural, does a closer look show something wrong?
Regards
Joe/Q.
-
Under magnification in sunlight the darker areas do show coloring like it is toning, but it does look like it could have been in the ground for a short time.
-
Its surface looks a bit blistered not as smooth as the others, so I thought it might have burned sometime long ago.

Thank you,Quadrans. The one you have is really nice and is higher grade silver. I am wondering if with the weaker silver and the missing "I" in SIGIMUNDI if it could be a contemporary counterfeit. Also, the "U" does not look the same.
-
Hi Edwards,
The missing letter or letters are frequent in this era, mostly at the end of the legends.
The letters are good shaped, only the low silver content is not really useful at this denars.

Joe

From what I understand, have you changed your priorities for the publication of subsequent volumes chronologically? I remember a note on publisher's website that the planned volume 4 would be devoted to much later times. I can't find it now, but was it something from late Transylvania?

Hi Edward,
So many nice coins and variations... +++
Congratulation
Joe/Q.

Thank you,Quadrans! :)

Dear Edward D,
Yesterday, I got an Hungarian (Slavonian) Denar, Lásló IV, type: Marten between rosettes/Double Cross with royal heads.
The legend says: MONETA REGIS UNGARIA instead of "Moneta Regis Esclavonia". Letters beside the cross are R - L.
It might be the type which Numista has listed up without picture, with references ÉH#17 and their own number N#79205.
The description of the coin there does not fit totally my piece, where they say:"Obverse no pearl circle".
I have the legend running between two pearl circles.
Would it not be more efficient to show you a picture? Certainly! But I do not want to infect your nice topic with a picture of mine.
Yes, I could start a new topic with the picture of my coin, but I want to be certain of your attention.
Hoping you can give me the correct reference for my coin, I am waiting for your instructions.
With congratulations on this interesting topic!
Jan P.
