Is this pottery ancient or modern?
« on: May 04, 2012, 02:02:16 pm »
I won this piece of pottery for a small sum a couple of years ago, thinking it may be ancient. Looks like a lid to an urn perhaps. The seller said it was an ocean find. Can you tell me if it's modern or thousands of years old?

Hi,

It looks to be the base of an amphora and from the encrustation is sea salvage. Without more of the shape it is impossible, I believe, to determine whether it is Greek, Roman, Islamic or Byzantine but I would certainly punt for at least 1,000 years old.

Regards,

Mauseus

Beware of amphoras  ( usually sold complete) with sea incrustations. In Spain very good repros ,including authentic incrustations are made.

How long does it take for sea encrustions to naturally occur? This piece is 14cm across at the broadest place so if it's from an amphora it must have been a pretty big one i think. Isn't it possible to judge by the color of the clay the age and where it's made? Thanks.

Don't worry about the authenticity of your fragment,on the pic it looks good. Age, difficult to be precise as already written.
Two pics of  replica "sea salvage".  "Anfora" and"pot". Made in Augusta Urbs Gaditana c.2007-2009 AD.
