Dear friends of Nikopolis ad Istrum!
Today I got the 1st copy of Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov, Nicopolis ad Istrum. It contains altogether 2482 types on 512 pp., all described and depicted b/w. Now it is my job to proofread it and to make needed corrections. I think it can be published in May 2017
It is the most comprehensive book about the coinage of Nikopolis ad Istrum worldwide. The book can be ordered from me by PM. It is printed on demand. The price is €120.- + shipping. Here I have the statistics oft the last 5 editions:
'11 '12 '13 '15 '17
1. pseudo-autonomous 23 29 27 31 34

Some coins from Nikopolis Addenda #4 haven't found their way into the new catalog. They were too worn.
But this is not the end of the story. The chase for new types goes on! So please see this thread as supplement of Nikopolis 2017!
Thanks
Jochen

I have only the 1st Ed. of Hristova-Jekov, but this coin seems to present at least a new die-combination, Pat Lawrence's MBd * and the Tyche Euposia found on rare Diadumenian Hr-Hoeft-J (2015) 8.25.38.10 ** -- if that's incorrect, please correct me.

Hi archivum!
Nice find! Not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2017). Can you provide size and weight? I would like to add it as #014 to this thread. Here is my description:
#014
A new die combination and a rev. variant for Macrinus
Macrinus, AD 217-218

struck under Statius Longinus
obv. AVT K M OPEL - CEVH MAKRINOC

c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2017):
rev. 8.25.38.10 var. (for Diadumenian)
obv. e.g. No. 8.23.7.7 (same die)
possibly unpublished
coll. archivum, Forum Ancient Coins
The legend break on rev. is only a suggestion!
Now we have altogether 6 types of Tyche Euposia from Nikopolis:
2x Macrinus: HrHJ (2017) 8.23.38.8 and your new type
3x Diadumenian: HrHJ (2017) 8.25.38.10-12
1x Elagabal: HrHJ (2017) 8.26.38.19
and 1 type from Markianopolis:
1x Caracalla: HJ (2014) 6.18.38.9
I love this type!
Best regards
-
Thanks, Jochen; I love this type too -- your long note on Euposia / Eubosia in "Coins of Mythological Interest" was very illuminating. (I think both spellings likely had their own supporters, with different ideas about what the word principally promised, a bit like "Good Drinks" or "Good Eats"!) Somewhere I have another Diadumenian / Euposia from Nikopolis that I must compare with the various dies now so well-catalogued on your various pages and Pat Lawrence's. As for this newly posted Macrinus / Euposia, weight / size are 13,25 g / 26 mm. I believe you're correct when it comes to the die-break on this one; the picture I posted does not fully do the coin justice, but that reverse legend is weak overhead on the coin itself, too.

Thanks to Curtis Clay

Maybe in fact Topirus, the same as RPC temp. 3619 (ANS, not illustrated), where the governor's name is wrongly restored as Maternus? This Hercules seated on rocks is a standard reverse type for Topirus. The weights of the two coins differ greatly, but their diameters are the same.
ΑV ΚΑΙ Μ ΑVΡ ΚΟΜΟΔΟС
Obverse design laureate head of Commodus, r.
Reverse inscription ƐΠΙ ΚΑΙ [ΜΑΤΕΡΝΟΥ?] [ΤΟ]ΠƐΙΡƐ[Ι]ΤΩΝ
Reverse design nude Heracles seated on rock covered with lion-skin, l., resting r. arm on club, l. arm behind rock
Metal Bronze
Average diameter 24 mm
Average weight 5.56 g
-
Thanks, Curtis! Yes it is the typical rev. type of Topiros. A coin of Antoninus has a similar depiction. I can read clearly KAIKI.CEPBEIΛ... But Caecilius Servilianus was in the times of Commodus governor of Thrace, so of Topiros too! And his title in Nicopolis ad Istrum was "hegemoneuontos". This coin is correctly described by Wildwinds!
Best regards
-
Jochen,
I'm not quite clear whether you are accepting or rejecting my suggestion?
It seems very likely to me that these are two descriptions of one and the same coin.
On the ANS specimen the governor's name is missing and Maternus has been wrongly restored in place of Servilianus.
On CNG's coin the ethnic is missing and the cataloguer has wrongly restored Nicopolis for Topirus.
I couldn't find the coin in Wildwinds; please specify what reference they cite, Mouchmov, Varbanov etc. and the catalogue number.
-
Dear Curtis, You are right and I accept your suggestion! This coin is listed at Wildwinds under Topiros, Commodus, CNG 90, 935.

Hello again Jochen; I think your #015 is http://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/4/10923/ -- in a much worse condition, I have one as well.
-
Thanks, I had found the coin from Jochen's instruction.
Curiously the coin is listed under the city Topirus, but not among Commodus' provincial coins after his imperial coins, under Commodus in the list of Roman emperors.
-
Hi, archivum!
I think you are right. The description matches #015. Sadly there is no pic.

This coin is very doubtful. It is remarkable that the obv. legend is written in Latin, very unusual for Nicopolis. This legend is unknown until now. And the rev. is from the same die as No. 8.18.21.2 for Caracalla.

-
That seems an impossible type combination!
The different patination on each side makes me think this is not a single coin, but rather a mixup of pictures joining the obverse of one coin with the reverse of another.
-
Maybe the auction was for a lot of two coins, and they showed the front of one and the back of the other. I've chased a few coins like that because the catalog was in a language I didn't understand.
-
It is interesting ,
the left picture are bigger than the right and if I try to mirrored the revers side horisontally and vertically I do not haved to overlaped perfectly the avers form of the coin , it means may be Curtis are right ...

Dear Joe!
Thank you for your contribution.
(1) 1st coin: Surely the style is Thracian/Northern Greece and IOVL DO - CEBACTH is known from Nicopolis ad Istrum too. But the hair-do would be a new one. Sadly the rev. legend is incomplete. So any mint with POLIS at the end is possible. And I have found it:
Plotinopolis, Julia Domna, Varbanov 1842 (same dies!), extemely rare (R9):
obv. IOVLIA DO - CEBACTH, draped bust r.
rev. PLWTEINO - POLEITWN, Tyche, wearing kalathos, stg. l., holding rudder and cornucopiae.
(2) 2nd coin: Yes, indeed, it is a completely new type for Geta!
I would describe it this way:
#023
A completely new type for Geta
Geta as Caesar, AD 198-209
AE 21, 4.601g, 0°
obv. L AVR K - .GETAC

obv. e.g. No. 8.22.6.3 (same die, even the dot before GETAC!)

Too bad about the fakes, which would have fooled me too!
Since the fakes are clearly casts of authentic originals, they could/should be left in the catalogue, with the note that they are casts, but represent genuine originals whose present location is unknown.

Yes, that's a good idea!

The rev. legend has clearly the legend error PROC IT. It is possibly that it is No. 8.10.47.3 because the depicted coin is very worn and the legends only partially readable. Then it would be a correction.

Hi archivum!
Both of your coins are listed in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2017):
(1) Caracalla with cow grazing r. is No. 8.18.53.2 (same dies).
(2) Diadumenian, Demeter enthronend l., struck under Agrippa, is No. 8.25.5.2 (same dies).

Hi, Jochen! Thanks for the reply! I ordered this coin from the seller. I can only say a weight, size and die axis after it will be in my hands

The appearance of this Concordia sacrificing type for Septimius under Gallus at Nicomedia is no great surprise, however, since the same type was already known at the same mint for Caracalla under Tertullus and for Geta as Augustus under Ulpian, HHJ 2012, pp. 211 and 255.
I am a little confused that HHJ 2012 assigns different type numbers to Concordia (36) and Homonoia (42). Has that been changed in later editions? I thought these two were one and the same personification.
-
There's a similar doubling of Tyche / Phortuna (Cyrillic) in Hr-J Nikopolis 1st edition; I hope that has been retired also. Jochen, many thanks for the Hr-H-J references.
-
Dear Curtis!
I always write Homonoia (like Varbanov too), because the legends are in Greek and Homonoia is the Greek equivalent for the Latin Concordia, cum grano salis. In Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov Mr. Jekov always writes Concordia, I think because Pick has always written Concordia instead of Homonoia. Why Pick has written Concordia whereas all other deities he has given their Greek names, I don't know. Perhaps you can solve this riddle.
I don't have seen any confusion of names in our last editions.

And another correction -- Hr-J 8.25.22.3 -- Diadumenian / Serpent on altar, AE 16, R8 -- this is actually a coin from Prusias ad Hypium (= Gk. PROYSIEWN PROS YPIW) in Bithynia, as this -- second known -- specimen confirms (my coin AE 16, 2.61 g, obverse die-match with RG 61, second photo below):

Dear archivum!
Thank you for your valuable contribution. Another step towards our goal. I must confess that I always was puzzled when I looked at that coin because it has had no parallels in Nicopolis.
I have added the sequential number to your post.

Dear friends of the coinage of Nicopolis ad Istrum!
A word before: I'm co-author of the last edition of Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov, The Coinage of Nicopolis ad Istrum, 2017. Therefore I'm responsible too for all the errors which I now try to correct.
Recently I got a coin of Elagabal from Nikopolis ad Istrum with Tyche on rev. and RW in ex. This coin is in bad state but has led to some corrections: We have altogether only 2 different types with this recv.:
#066

(2) HrHJ (2017) 8.26.38.13 corr. (writes AVT K M AVR, writes "with kalathos")
obv. AVT M AVR - ANTWNEINOC corr.
(E and C rounded, C in contact with drapery on l. shoulder)
= 8.26.1.7 (same die)
rev. VP NOBIOV ROVF(OV) NIKOPOLITWN PROC ICT / RW,
3rd Ov ligate (V above O), Tyche without kalathos
Both types have the same rev. legend with ligate OV (V above O) and RW in ex. But the depiction is different:
(1) Tyche is wearing kalathos
(2) Tyche without kalathos
No. 8.26.38.25 is identical with No. 8.26.38.13 and should be deleted.

On this new coin the rev. legends are well readable and the pics should be exchanged. And we can see that HrHJ (2017) 8.10.32.5 corr. is identical with 8.10.32.14 (writes ICTR in error) too, which can be taken off the list.

I think that the coin has been roughly cleaned, but the A was part of the original design, not added by the cleaner.

Dear Friends of Nikopolis!
Because Mr. Jekov is printing the new 2018 edition of "Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov, The Coinage of Nicopolis ad Istrum" I close this thread. All 131 entrances will be taken over into the new edition. And I will start a new thread "Nikopolis Addenda #6" for further additions.
The result of this thread was:
1) new types ....................... 26 (known motives, but different depictions)
completely new ones .............16 (new unknown motives)
(2) legend variants …............. 41
(3) new die combinations ….... 54
(4) corrections ..................... 39

Caracalla AE18, 3.02g, laur. draped cuir. bust r., AV KES ANTWN / Homonoia with patera and cornucopiae standing left, retrograde legend NIKOPOLI PROS ISTR -- actually sold as Philippopolis. Hr-H-J 8.18.36 v., Varbanov 2957 v. Although Jochen has noted other retrograde legends for this mint (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=73689.msg462794#msg462794 and https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=52692.msg326971), I don't think that these dies get a reference in either Hr-H-J or Varbanov; corresponding to the description of a single Vienna specimen in AMNG 1597, there is one other specimen on WildWinds page http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/moesia/nikopolis/i.html (from an H. J. Berk sale; second picture below).

Dear archivum!
Thank you for your contribution. But I think this type is already listed under HrHJ (2018) 8.18.36.14. I have added the coins from my Collection, sadly in worse state than the ones depicted in your post.
